Tottenham Hotspur began life without Michael Carrick with an impressive 2-1 victory over Italian giants Inter Milan yesterday.

Finnish midfielder Teemu Tainio sealed the victory with a sublime goal that saw him run 40 yards with the ball before slotting it past former Italy number one Francesco Toldo.

The win sees Spurs keep their impressive 100% pre-season record.

West Brom manager Bryan Robson has made 21-year-old defender Curtis Davies his new captain at the club.

The talented defender, who is currently being courted by Tottenham, Portsmouth and Arsenal has only just signed a new deal at the club and will be keen to repay his managers faith in him.

Robson said: “I’ve made him captain because of his character. He’s grown up very quickly in the last couple of years.”

Is this guy all he is cracked up to be?????

Martin Jol has insisted that he does not have any ill feelings towards want-away Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick.

“No, not at all,” said Jol

“Michael Carrick was always a terrific servant to this club and he never moaned even when we told him he had to stay a couple of weeks ago.

“The only thing he said was that he wanted to go to Manchester United for the challenge and Man Utd is a terrific club.

“In the end they had to compensate us and good luck to him.

“Michael is an honest lad and hopefully he will do as well for them as he did for us.”

Reports are today suggesting that Tottenham star Michael Carrick will be a Manchester United in the next couple of days.

If the move goes ahead, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will finally have landed one of his major off-season targets and will be happy to have filled the troublesome holding midfield position at the club.

Carrick will apparently sign £50,000-a-week four year deal at Old Trafford.

Jermaine Defoe has revealed his satisfaction at how he, Robbie Keane and new signing Dimitar Berbatov have combined during pre-season.

Defoe said: “I think it is working well,”.

“We have won every game. We went to France and played some good teams with the formation and I think it is good.

“Robbie is good at dropping in, turning and creating things and it is good. If we keep doing things in training and get used to the system then it can work.”

Newly promoted Watford is being linked to Tottenham outcast Wayne Routledge today.

The lightning fast 21-year-old, of whom much was expected, has failed to impress the staff at White Hart Lane since his £4million transfer from Crystal Palace and could be on his way out of the club in the next couple of weeks.

Charlton are also believed to be interested in acquiring his services.

Manchester City starlet Micah Richards seems to have put an end to the rumours linking him with a move to Tottenham by signing a new four-year deal with the club today.

The talented 18-year-old has attracted the attention of boss Martin Jol and he reportedly had a recent £5million offer rejected by City.

Martin Jol has praised Jermain Defoe for his performance in the 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo yesterday while also praising the attitude of the striker in training.

“Jermain is a goal poacher,” said Jol.

“He started training on Monday so this is his first week back, but you know Jermain - he loves his football.

“He came back, he wanted to play and he has been good.”

Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he is in for Carrick. Stay away from our squad Alex.

Fergie said: “We are trying to sign another central midfielder,”

“We have made a bid for Michael Carrick, but they turned it down.”

United have been linked to both Carrick and Defoe this week. Lets hope we can keep them both and sign Duff and we will be pushing the top four all the way this season.

Ledley King is excited with his return to action. So am I :)

He said:”It was nice to be back out there to get some minutes under my belt and most importantly to get through the game with no problems,” King told the club’s official website.

“It’s been a long time, especially over the summer watching all the games in the World Cup.

“It was great to be back and playing with the lads again.

“It was a disappointing end to the season both for me personally in terms of the injury and the team just missing out on fourth place.

“I then had the disappointment with England as well.

“All these things make you stronger and next season I’m determined to bounce back and enjoy another good season at Spurs.”
